Shopify Markets makes it technically simple to sell in multiple countries and languages. But the default config is optimized for checkout, not SEO. Without the right signals your translated pages rank below local competitors β or worse: don't get indexed at all.
The three pillars of international SEO
- URL structure β subfolder per language (
/en,/de) or subdomain (en.shop.com). Subfolders win for most brands: one domain authority, easier management. - Hreflang signals β tell Google which page belongs to which language/region. Essential to avoid duplicate-content between translations.
- Local content β literally translated text rarely ranks well. Search intent and word choice differ per market.
Hreflang: what Markets does and doesn't do
Shopify Markets adds hreflang tags automatically if you've configured a separate language/domain per market. Always verify manually: view source on a product page and find <link rel="alternate" hreflang="...">. Missing a language or wrong-market URLs means a config bug.
Translate vs localize
A 1-to-1 translation of your English product description to German often feels unnatural and misses local search terms. Localize instead of translate: in each language use the words the target market would actually type. With AI product descriptions you can generate a unique version per Markets language β not translated, but rewritten using the same product data as the source. Pshly syncs each per language to the correct Markets metafield so each market shows its own unique copy.
Local signals that accelerate rankings
- Local price in local currency β boosts trust and CTR from search results.
- Local shipping and return info directly on the product page.
- Reviews in the local language β mixed-language reviews underperform 100% local ones.
- Local internal links between translated pages β no internal links crossing between markets.
Measuring per market
Add each domain variant or subfolder as a separate property in Search Console. That way you see which market gets traction, which lags, and where to push more content. Use content opportunities per market to spot gaps in your translated catalog.
Common mistakes
- One product description in one language across all markets β Google sees duplicate content per Markets domain.
- Hreflang tags pointing at 404 pages after deleting variants.
- Automatic browser redirects based on IP without JS fallback β this blocks Googlebot.
